Life energy beliefs around the world

i is the Chinese term for life energy, or life spirit, a vital force that flows through all living things. Similar beliefs exist all over the world, in many cultures. Here is an encyclopedia of such beliefs - and of terms mistakenly believed to be such.

Yari is a deity on Tobi island in Micronesia, in th religion that legend claims was introduced by visitors to the island. Yari can also mean the spirit of an ancient hero. It is sometimes mentioned as a synonym to qi, which is doubtful.

Yesod (Hebrew for ‘base’) is the 9^th sefirot (from the Hebrew sappir, sapphire) on the Tree of Life, the basic cosmological diagram of Kabbalah. Yesod stands for pure life, in the meaning untarnished or cleansed. The parallel to qi lies in yesod describing God’s essence, the divine life force that permeates all of creation. Closer to qi, though, is the Hebrew concept ruach (see this word). See also neutral force.
